The first steps that you should be doing when you are thinking of filing for a divorce are typically things that you would do whenever you’re going to start a big project; organization is really key. You’re going to be having to gather a lot of financial documents, a lot of information and the best way to help your attorney or yourself is really by organizing the things that you want your attorney to know and/or the court to know. So, organization is really important.
Something that I find with a lot of my clients, prospective and current client’s, is that they’re not always ready for some of the things that are going to be happening. They may not be financially ready and they may not be emotionally ready so when you start thinking about that you’re going to be wanting to file you really want to make sure that you’re getting yourself prepared emotionally and financially.
If you are a spouse that’s never worked outside the home it can sometimes take months in order to have the court award you any kind of financial relief so you really want to make sure that you’ve got the ability to carry yourself out financially while the case is sort of getting to where you can get some assistance.
Additionally, emotionally, it is a very taxing situation to go through a divorce so you want to make sure that you’ve got the network in place in order to be able to get yourself to where you need to be and making decisions that are not just coming from a tired, I want to get this over with standpoint, but actually from a well-thought out fiscally sound position.See all videos
